1 Hospital In Connecticut Among America’s Best: Money

CONNECTICUT — Just about everyone in Connecticut will require hospital care at some point in their lives. But according to a new report, there's just one best-of-the-best facility that delivers across all categories in the state.

Digital platform Money teamed up with The Leapfrog Group to compile its inaugural Best Hospitals In America list. The analysts sifted through data for 6,000 hospitals across the country, and found 148 that consistently provide great care.

All the health care facilities fell into five different classifications: general hospitals, children’s hospitals, rural hospitals, large teaching hospitals and small teaching hospitals. The premiere hospitals on the 2022 list span 29 states.

Hartford Hospital is the only Connecticut hospital to get a thumbs-up in all the report's classifications: critical care, labor delivery, complex surgery, safety grade and something the Money/Leapfrog analysts call "never events." These are events that should "never happen" in a hospital, but if they do, the hospital fully complies with the elements of Leapfrog's "Never Events" policy. The guidelines detail a course of action that includes waiving the costs related to the event and follow-up care, and reporting the event to an external agency.

To select the best hospitals, Money and The Leapfrog Group used data from The Leapfrog Group’s Hospitals Survey, its Hospital Safety Grade assessment and public data sources.

For more than 20 years, The Leapfrog Group has evaluated hospitals on numerous criteria from ICU staffing to high-risk surgery outcomes to maternity care. Factors that weighed heavily in determining this year’s best hospitals were hospital infection rates, maternity care, pediatrics, medication management, hand hygiene practices, nursing workforce and critical care.

California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were the states with the greatest number of best hospitals. Each of these states had 10 or more hospitals that received the designation. Florida led the way with 26 top facilities.
