CONNECTICUT — Sixteen high schools in Connecticut, all members of the Class Act Program through the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC), have been designated as Michaels Achievement Cup Award winners for the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Michaels Cup Committee recognizes exemplary athletic programs for their willingness to subscribe to the Class Act Sportsmanship standards, empowering students to take an active role in their school climate and their continued support for community service, according to the CIAC.

"These 16 schools have made sportsmanship a priority in their district," CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said. "The essence of the Class Act Program is for the students to try and take ownership of sportsmanship at their schools – and that is exactly what these schools have done. The energy and enthusiasm they've fostered, along with the positivity surrounding their athletic programs, is what we are pleased to recognize and highlight as an example."

The Michaels Cup was created in the early 1980s as the brainchild of Roy Michaels, owner of Michaels Jewelry, in an effort to recognize outstanding athletic programs.

The 16 winning schools will be formally recognized during the CIAC's virtual Sportsmanship Conference on Feb. 10.
