CONNECTICUT — The business magazine Fortune has released its annual list of the most admired companies in the world.

Apple took the top spot on the list for the second year in a row, with Amazon and Microsoft rounding out the top three.

Booking Holdings

You may not have heard of parent Booking Holdings, but you know its children Booking.com, Priceline.com, Agoda.com, Kayak.com, Cheapflights, Rentalcars.com, Momondo, and OpenTable. According to their 2017 annual report, travelers booked 673.1 million room nights of accommodation, 73.0 million rental car days, and 6.9 million airplane tickets using websites owned by this Norwalk-based company.

United Technologies Corporation

This multinational conglomerate is based in Farmington, and researches, develops and manufactures across a number of areas, but is best known for its work as an aerospace and defense contractor. The company gets about 10 percent of its revenue from is work for the US government through its more familiar divisions Pratt & Whitney, Sikorsky and Hamilton Sundstrand.

The days when this corporation's name was synonymous with "copy" may be gone, but this nimble document technology business headquartered in Norwalk remains among the top ten contenders in its highly competitive industry.

XPO Logistics

The worldwide industry leader in trucking and transport is based in Greenwich. XPO Logistics operates in 30 countries, with approximately 100,000 employees and over 50,000 customers.

To be considered on the list, a company has to either be one of the 1,000 largest in the United States by revenue, or a company based outside the United States in Fortune’s Global 500 database that has a revenue of $10 billion or more.

This assortment of companies was subsequently narrowed down to include the 680 highest-revenue companies in each industry, such as computer software, entertainment and real estate.

The overall rankings were then compiled by Forbes in partnership with the management consulting company Korn Ferry by surveying executives, directors and analysts in their own industry.
