Longtime CT Movie Theater Sold, Last Day Of Service Announced

"It is a somber fact of life that nothing lasts forever, no matter how much we may wish it could," the owner said in a message to residents.

Gilson Cafe & Cinema, the beloved movie theater in Winsted that's been open for over 40 years, has been sold, according to an announcement from owner and operator Alan Nero.

In a letter posted to social media, Nero said the building at 354 Main St. is under contract after five years of being on the market, and the sale is set to go through.

As a result, May 23 will be the Gilson's last night of service. It was not immediately clear who purchased the property or what will become of the old brick building.

Nero said the decision to sell "was not lightly made."

He first purchased the old Strand Theatre in 1985 and transformed it into the Gilson. The theater offers a full food menu for moviegoers to enjoy, with soups, appetizers, sandwiches, desserts, coffee, cocktails and wine.

Nero said the theater was named after his mentor, Warren Gilson, who taught him "everything he knew about serving as a projectionist to bring the magic of the silver screen to my audiences."

"Over the last 41 years, I have given everything- blood, sweat, and tears- to a business and building that has been filled with magic. The magic of teams that have been my found family. The magic of loyal patrons and friends who have visited and gifted me with loyalty which spanned a lifetime. The magic of connecting with a community I am proud to have been a part of since I was born," Nero said.

"But it is a somber fact of life that nothing lasts forever, no matter how much we may wish it could."

Residents expressed sadness at the announcement.

"Best of luck. Thanks for providing so much happiness to all over the years," one person commented on Facebook.

"As I look back on the past 40 years, I'm filled with a mix of sadness and joy. The Gilson has been more than just a cinema - it's been a hub for our community, a place where memories are made and friendships forged," another person wrote. "Thank you for your tireless efforts in bringing magic to our lives. Congratulations on your retirement, and I wish you all the best for the future!"

Nero said it's time for him to step away and focus on new pursuits.

"I am proud of what I have accomplished. I am proud to have seen so many people who have joined our team grow, change, and move on to lead good lives. I am proud to have reached and connected with so many of you over the years," Nero added. "As I move on toward the future, I will miss every one of you."
