Children's Toys Recalled Over Lead Poisoning Risk: CT Officials

Connecticut health officials are warning parents and caregivers about a recall involving miniature decorative toys found to contain unsafe levels of lead.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health issued the alert Thursday following a recall by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission involving Darice Timeless Minis miniature red wagons, watering cans and chairs.

Officials said the products contain lead levels that violate the federal lead paint ban and pose a risk of lead poisoning to children.

"Lead poisoning is entirely preventable, and no level of lead exposure is safe for children," Connecticut Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Manisha Juthani said in a statement.

State officials are urging anyone who has the products to stop using them immediately and throw them away. The products should not be donated or given to others.

Health officials also recommend contacting a healthcare provider to discuss lead testing if a child may have repeatedly handled the recalled items.

According to DPH, young children are especially vulnerable to lead exposure because their bodies absorb lead more easily than adults and because they are more likely to place objects in their mouths.

Exposure can cause developmental delays, learning difficulties, irritability, fatigue and other health problems.

Residents can report incidents related to the products through the Consumer Product Safety Commission and find additional recall information through the agency's website.
