Norfolk Volunteer Firefighter Battles Serious Health Issues, Community Rallies To Assist

NORFOLK, CT — A local volunteer firefighter has been unable to work due to serious medical issues, and now the community is raising money to help.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist Lt. Brad Funk and his family.

According to the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department, Funk has served as an interior firefighter for about 11 years, and is someone who "has always been there when others needed help."

"Today, Brad and his family need our help," the department said, in a Facebook post this week.

The fundraiser, "Help Brad's Family Through His Recovery Journey," had raised $6,170 as of Thursday afternoon toward a $9,000 goal.

According to the campaign, Funk suffered a spinal fluid leak that caused severe neurological symptoms, including episodes of partial paralysis. He underwent cervical neck fusion surgery 18 months ago.

The hope had been that this surgery would result in a full recovery, but it didn't. In recent weeks, Funk underwent another surgery. Now, complications have "left him bedbound and unable to work," the fire department said, in the Facebook post.

"As the provider for his family and father of three children, this has created an enormous financial hardship," the post said.

Money raised through the campaign will be used toward expenses such as medical costs, household bills, and transportation to medical appointments.

"Those who know Brad know he has never hesitated to put others before himself," the fire department said. "Now it's our turn to stand beside him and his family during this incredibly difficult time."

Campaign organizer Brittany Hosier of Sharon said the family is "struggling to keep up while he focuses on healing."

"Thank you for your kindness, prayers, and support as we navigate this long road to recovery," Hosier said, in the campaign.
