Borelli had been with the local department for six years, joining the force after he retired from the Connecticut State Police, where he worked for two decades.

"He was a dedicated law enforcement officer, father, husband and friend," the announcement said. "Officer Andrew Borelli will be truly missed."

According to his obituary, Borelli, 51, passed away following a brief illness. He leaves behind a wife and twin sons.

"Service was at the heart of who Andy was," his obituary says. "Whether patrolling his community, helping in the classroom, or coaching his sons and their teammates, he believed that we become our best selves by serving others."

A GoFundMe campaign is currently raising money to help the family. As of Thursday evening, it had raised more than $3,200 toward a goal of $14,000.

The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home in Cheshire is in charge of the arrangements.
