The National Weather Service issued the alert for Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties.

"An approaching frontal system acting on a very moist air mass may produce heavy rainfall capable of causing isolated to scattered flooding Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening," the National Weather Service said Friday.

In the short term, both today and Saturday are expected to be dry, with plenty of sunshine both days.

Highs today will reach the low 80s, while Saturday will be cooler, with highs around 70, forecasters said.

Saturday will be the best day of the weekend for outdoor plans, and it will become increasingly cloudy Saturday night into early Sunday, according to meteorologists.

The National Weather Service predicts rain will begin Sunday afternoon around 2 p.m. and continue overnight.

WFSB is calling Sunday a "First Alert Weather Day," due to the rain and expected impact on outdoor plans.

"In addition to rain that could be heavy at times, it will be cool with highs in the 60s," WFSB reported. "We'll be monitoring where the axis or bullseye of heaviest rain sets up. If it ends up across CT, the threat for flooding would increase."

The rain is expected to taper off early Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Looking ahead to the early workweek, it will be on the cooler side, with daytime highs in the 60s on Monday and again on Tuesday, when fall arrives.
