Connecticut's Department of Motor Vehicles is launching Mobile ID, which will allow state residents to verify their identity and age with a mobile device, on Nov. 18.

Mobile ID is designed to complement, but not replace, a state resident's physical driver's license or identification card.

People should continue to carry their physical credentials, according to the DMV.

Residents interested in getting the Mobile ID will need their physical driver's license or identification card to set it up.

Initially, acceptance of the Mobile ID will be limited. Police, for example, will not accept it as a substitute for a physical driver's license. It also can't be used for voting or as a flash pass, DMV officials said.

It will immediately be useful for travel purposes. At launch, Connecticut Mobile ID will be accepted by the Transportation Security Administration at participating security checkpoints nationwide, including Bradley International Airport and Tweed New Haven Airport.

The free app will be available through The App Store and Google Play.

Businesses will not be required to accept mobile IDs, but they may choose to do so as usage increases. If businesses decide to accept mobile IDs, they will need a compatible verification app to validate them.

DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera said Mobile ID represents the department's commitment to embracing technology.

"We look forward to seeing the program grow, particularly through the expansion of relying parties and the increased adoption and use of Mobile ID amongst residents," Guerrera said. "This is a big step forward in our ongoing efforts to deliver convenient access to our services."

Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli said it will be communicating with the interested business community in the next month about mobile ID acceptance.

"We will provide these businesses with the information and resources they need to ensure compliance with our laws and regulations while still embracing this new technology," Cafferelli said.
