BURLINGTON, CT — A Bristol motorist is accused of driving under the influence and crashing into an ice cream truck early Sunday morning, according to state police.
No one was injured in the accident, police said.
Branden Anderson Alvarado, 27, of 250 Aldbourne Dr., Bristol, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to maintain lane.
The accident happened around 1:18 a.m. on Milford Street near the intersection with South Main Street. State troopers were dispatched to the scene after getting an automatic vehicle crash notification.
Alvarado was driving a Toyota Camry south on Milford Street, an accident report shows.
State police said the vehicle crossed the double solid center lines and continued traveling south in the northbound lane. It veered off of the road, and then struck a concrete barrier and the ice cream truck in the front lawn of 418 Milford St., which is the address for Tonn's Marketplace. The vehicle came to rest on the business' front lawn, according to the accident report.
Alvarado reported no injuries to Burlington emergency medical responders, and he refused transport to the hospital. His vehicle had to be towed from the scene due to the damage from the crash.
The accident caused property damage to the ice cream trailer, listed as being owned by SCOOPD LLC of Burlington.
In a Facebook post Sunday, the business announced Farmstead Ice Cream truck at Tonn's Marketplace will be closed until further notice due to the accident, though the main farm store remains open.
"The truck was hit late overnight by a drunk driver," the announcement states. "Thankfully our safety bollards stopped further damage. Tonn's Marketplace was not affected and will remain open as usual."
"Thankfully the driver was not hurt," the post added.
Alvarado was released on a $500 non-surety bond, and he is due to appear in Superior Court in Torrington on Nov. 16.
