DANBURY, CT — Two Danbury residents were involved in a three-vehicle crash in neighboring New York that left an 87-year-old Brewster woman dead Tuesday morning, according to New York State Police.
Troopers responded Danbury Road in the town of Southeast around 7:20 a.m. Nov. 3 for a reported crash involving injuries, police said.
A preliminary investigation found that Helen Gambino, 87, of Brewster, was stopped at a stop sign on Dingle Ridge Road in a 2024 Subaru before attempting to turn left onto Danbury Road, according to police.
As Gambino entered the roadway, her vehicle was struck by an eastbound 2015 BMW driven by a 19-year-old Danbury resident, police said.
The impact caused Gambino's Subaru to overturn and come to rest in the center median.
Following the initial collision, the BMW struck a 2009 Honda driven by a 23-year-old Danbury resident, who was traveling eastbound in the right lane of Danbury Road, according to police.
Gambino was transported to Danbury Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The 19-year-old driver was also taken to Danbury Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The third driver was not injured, police said.
As of Thursday, Nov. 5, neither Danbury driver had been issued a citation or charged in connection with the crash, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation.
