The Best Company In Connecticut To Work For: Fortune

CONNECTICUT — The business magazine Fortune, in partnership with analytics firm Great Place to Work, has released its annual list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in the United States.

Hilton took home the top spot on the list for the second year in a row, with Ultimate Software and Wegmans Food Markets rounding out the top three.

Only one Connecticut company, the financial services and insurance firm Synchrony, in Stamford, made Fortune's "Top 100" list. The company ranked #44, climbing from its 2019 position at #51. Synchrony currently employs 9,868 people, but as of February 2020 has posted openings for 200 jobs. The public company posted revenues in 2019 of $19.461 billion, a 6.62 percent increase from 2018. Women comprise 62.1 percent of Synchrony's workforce, and 44.6 percent of the employees are minorities.

Synchrony CEO Margaret Keane aims to ensure that employees are trained (and retrained) as the needs of the financial services firm evolve. The company provides reskilling opportunities for its workers that include career planning, technology skill development, and access to mentorships to ensure that employees can advance within the organization, according to Fortune.

In addition, Synchrony offers a tuition-reimbursement benefit of $24,000 a year for full-time workers and up to $9,000 for part-timers. Subsidized childcare, health insurance for part-timers, and telecommuting are a few of the other, many perks employees of the firm enjoy.

To be considered for the list, companies submitted an application detailing over 200 data points describing their HR programs and practices. Great Place to Work, an analytics firm that has partnered with Fortune to create the list for the past 23 years, then conducted an anonymous survey of each company's workforce.

In total, 85 percent of the evaluation was based on what employees reported in the survey about "their experiences of trust and reaching their full human potential as part of their organization," according to a methodology section for the rankings on Fortune’s website.

Companies need to employ at least 1,000 U.S. employees to be considered for the list, and government agencies aren’t eligible.
