Bobcat Attacked Man In Columbia, May Be Rabid: Officials

A Connecticut man was bitten by a bobcat in Columbia Friday. Officials ask the public to be on the lookout for the animal.

COLUMBIA, CT — Officials are searching for a bobcat after it attacked a man in Columbia Friday.

The attack happened on Hunt Road, according to the Town of Columbia. Officials with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection went searching for the bobcat, but couldn't locate it.

The victim told officials that the bobcat was under his truck and attacked him as he approached, according to the New Haven Register. The animal's behavior suggests it may be rabid, and anyone who sees a bobcat acting strangely should call 911 or DEEP dispatch at 860-424-3333.

Bobcats are versatile hunters, but rarely attack humans, according to DEEP. They mainly hunt wild prey, but occasionally will attack livestock and domestic cats.

Bobcats have a short "bobbed" tail. Adult males can weigh as much as 35 pounds and measure up to 37 inches in length, while females typically weigh up to 30 pounds and measure 32 inches in length.
