There were certainly no runaway victories in the three CIAC state championship finals played Friday night, with the total margin of victory being just four runs.

Masuk claimed its second straight Class L softball title, as a scoreless pitching duel between Sam Schiebe and East Haven's Tori Heapy was broken up by a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Panthers a 2-0 win to earn the repeat championship at DeLuca Field in Stratford.

At West Haven High School, Somers trailed 2-1 in the Class S final, but rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning and held off Coginchaug for a 3-2 win, the school's first-ever state title in softball.

Finally, on the baseball diamond at Palmer Field in Middletown, a run-scoring single by Waterford's Cadin Maynard provided the game's only tally as the Lancers upset top-ranked Berlin 1-0 in the Class L title contest.
