Coronavirus CT: Infection Rate, Hospitalizations Climbing

CONNECTICUT — The coronavirus infection rate in the state took a sharp turn in the wrong direction this week, according to the latest data from the Department of Public Health.

The infection rate jumped to 3 percent in the past 24 hours, on the back of 434 new cases. An additional 14,653 people were tested, bringing the state total to 2,051,670.

Deaths attributed to COVID-19 also climbed by five. Since the pandemic began, there have now been 64,455 cases in the state and 4,559 deaths.

There are currently 217 people hospitalized due to the coronavirus, 22 more in the past day.

The group with the largest number of cases is residents in their 50s, with 10,194. The most vulnerable to succumbing to the disease remains the most elderly. There have been 2,721 deaths among people age 80 and older.

Gov. Ned Lamont said Tuesday the state had not seen an infection spike this high since early June. He said infection rates have been elevated recently throughout the country, as well as in neighboring states.

"We're going to have to be disciplined a little bit longer," Lamont said.

7. East Hartford: 22

8. Bristol: 15

9. East Haven: 9

10. Groton: 5
