CT Coronavirus Hospitalizations Exceed 1,000

Coronavirus hospitalizations exceeded 1,000 patients for the first time since mid-May.

CONNECTICUT — Connecticut coronavirus hospitalizations exceeded 1,000 on Thanksgiving, the highest total since mid-May.

The state reported a net increase of 49 patients between Wednesday and Thursday. Another 35 coronavirus deaths were reported over two days as well, bringing the state total up to 4,961 and on track to cross a grim milestone of 5,000 deaths sometime in the next few days.

There were 3,429 positive cases out of more than 71,000 reported results over two days. Bridgeport continued a trend of being the hardest-hit municipality with more than 270 cases reported over two days. Bridgeport is Connecticut’s largest city by population, but its case rate is still among the highest when adjusted for population.

The state’s positive test rate was 4.81 percent for two days, which continued an ebb-and-flow trend. Connecticut’s positive test rate from Nov. 1-26 is 4.8 percent. Testing has increased markedly, especially over the past month, with the state being on track to run around 1 million tests in November.

The national seven-day rolling average for positive tests is around 9.5 percent while Connecticut’s is around 5.5 percent, according to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus tracker. Wyoming’s rolling positive test rate was above 50 percent.

Epidemiologists use the positive test rate as a way to measure whether enough testing is being done in an area and as an indicator of how widespread transmission is in a community, according to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
