CONNECTICUT — Connecticut car owners are felt less pain at the pump when the state gas tax suspension went into effect April 1. Since then, gas prices have dropped to an average of $4.03 a gallon, which is 28 cents lower than a week ago, according to AAA Northeast.

Still, gas costs six cents more than last month and $1.14 more a gallon since last year. Neighboring states Massachusetts and New York experienced six and seven cent drops during the past week.

Connecticut's excise gas tax will remain suspended until the end of June. The move passed with unanimous consent in the state legislature and was quickly signed by Gov. Ned Lamont into law.

  • Lower Fairfield County $4.08
    New Haven/Meriden $4.03
  • Greater Hartford $3.99
  • New London/Norwich $4.05
  • Windham/Middlesex $3.99

The national cost of gas dropped to $4.19 a gallon. Additional price drops are likely in the near future after President Joe Biden announced he would release 1 million barrels of oil a day from the country's Strategic Petroleum Reserve for the next six month.

“The announcement of more oil being released from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has helped reduce the price of crude oil,” said Alec Slatky, Director of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Northeast in a statement.
