What To Know About The Candidates
Lamont is seeking another four years in office after campaigning on his administration's record of improving Connecticut's finances, delivering tax relief and increasing investments in education, transportation and families.
A former telecommunications businessman who previously served on Greenwich's Board of Selectmen, Lamont has highlighted programs including Connecticut Paid Leave, Covered Connecticut and tax relief measures enacted during his administration.
His campaign priorities include expanding affordable housing, increasing access to child care and prekindergarten programs, continuing free school meals and addressing rising energy and health care costs.
Fazio has centered his campaign on making Connecticut more affordable, arguing that high taxes, electricity bills and government spending have placed growing pressure on residents and businesses.
A former investment industry professional, Fazio proposed reducing Connecticut's four lowest marginal income tax rates over four years, with cuts totaling more than $2.5 billion annually once fully implemented.
He also proposed reducing electricity bills by 20 percent over time, limiting property tax increases, expanding housing supply while preserving local zoning control and reducing government spending.
Taxes, Energy And Immigration Shape Governor's Race
The candidates presented competing approaches to some of Connecticut's biggest challenges during their final gubernatorial debate at Mohegan Sun on Oct. 27.
Fazio criticized the state's high electricity costs and pledged to remove certain charges from residents' bills, while Lamont defended his administration's energy policies, including efforts to preserve the Millstone nuclear power plant.
The two also disagreed over taxes. Fazio called for income tax reductions and limits on property tax increases, while Lamont pointed to tax cuts enacted during his administration and increased state aid to municipalities.
Immigration enforcement emerged as another major issue.
Lamont defended Connecticut's Trust Act and criticized certain federal immigration enforcement practices, while Fazio argued that the state should reconsider restrictions on cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
The candidates also debated automated license plate reader cameras, education funding, student achievement and the rising cost of special education.
