CT Nears 6,000 Coronavirus Deaths In New Year

The state saw a second consecutive day of a higher positive test rate, but hospitalizations continue to drop for now.

CONNECTICUT — Connecticut finished an awful 2020 with nearly 6,000 coronavirus-related deaths and another concerning high positive test rate that doesn’t bode well for the New Year.

The state reported another 31 coronavirus deaths Thursday, which brought the state total up to 5,995. At the current rate Connecticut is bound to break the grim milestone on New Year’s Day. Around 900 Connecticut residents died from the virus between Dec. 1 and 30.

Thursday was also the second consecutive day of a high positive coronavirus test rate after another 2,045 cases were reported. Thursday’s positive test rate was 8.95 percent and Wednesday’s was 9.14 percent.

On a more positive note, coronavirus hospitalizations also saw a 31-patient drop Thursday following a 59-patient drop Wednesday. There are now 1,136 people hospitalized for the virus in Connecticut.
