CT Politicians Enthusiastic About President Biden Inauguration

Connecticut state and national politicians said they were optimistic that President Joe Biden could unite the country.

CONNECTICUT — Connecticut politicians and officials congratulated President Joe Biden after he was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

Gov. Ned Lamont, an early supporter of Biden’s presidential bid, tweeted that he was confident Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris could unite the country.

Connecticut State Department of Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona left Lamont's administration after Biden nominated him for national education secretary. Biden has made reopening more schools across the country a top priority in his first 100 days.

Biden’s administration has proposed $350 billion in aid for state and local governments, which will help Connecticut avoid cuts to essential workers amid the pandemic, said State Treasurer Shawn Wooden.

“Today’s inaugural ceremony of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris is an important step on our country’s path towards healing,” Wooden said in a statement. “While they are taking office amidst a global pandemic, economic downturn, and racial reckoning, I am fully confident in their ability to get our country back on track. President Biden’s leadership and history of resilience, humility and hope are uniquely suited for him to meet the greatest challenges of our time with grace.”

Yesterday U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy said he was glad to hear that the Biden administration would end support for the Saudi Arabia military campaign in Yemen.

U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro will play an important role as chair of the powerful House Appropriations Committee. She tweeted, “What an exciting day! Filled with hope and promise.”

Other members of the Connecticut House delegation were also enthusiastic about Biden's inauguration.

U.S. Rep. Jim Himes tweeted, “About to head over to the Capitol for what I hope is a better, kinder more competent America. So grateful to the organizers, leaders and voters that got us here. @JoeBiden

U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes tweeted, “Congratulations Mr. President and Madame Vice President. #Inauguration2021
