CT Restaurant Manager Charged In Racial Slur Incident: Reports

PLAINFIELD, CT — A restaurant manager has been charged on accusations that he refused service and used racial slurs against a high school basketball team, WFSB 3-TV reported. Brett White, 22, of Plainfield, was charged with second-degree breach of peace.

The incident occurred Wednesday around 10 p.m. at a Plainfield Wendy's. Police made contact with members of the Woodstock Academy basketball team, who said the manager called them racial slurs, according to WFSB 3-TV.

The boys' basketball team had been returning from an away game when they stopped at the restaurant. When the manager was questioned as to why they were being refused service, he verbally assaulted the team's coaches with expletives and racial slurs, according to a statement from Woodstock Academy.

“While I am angry and devastated over this incident, I could not be more proud of our coaches and student-athletes. These coaches are building fine young men who are going to change the world,” Head of School Chris Sandford said in a statement. “This experience is not only life-changing for those involved, but it has also shown that the work we have been doing as a school community in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion is more important than ever.”

A team meeting was held to process and discuss the events with the team and all who were involved, according to the school statement. Counseling and support services were made available to students.

“It was never about us,” Assistant Coach Denzel Washington said in the statement. “We were just thinking about the kids and the fact that we had to get them home. This story could have had a very different outcome.”

White was released on $10,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Danielson Superior Court on Feb. 21, NBC CT reported.
