Oxford Wrong-Way Driver Hits State Police Cruiser On Highway, Flees Scene: Police (VIDEO)

A woman is facing operating under the influence and other charges, according to state police.

A motorist drove the wrong way on Route 8 early Wednesday and hit a state police cruiser which was responding to intercept the vehicle, state police said.

Cindy Martins, 36, of Echo Valley Road, Oxford, was charged with operating under the influence, reckless driving, driving the wrong way, and evading responsibility.

On Wednesday around 3:23 a.m., troopers were dispatched to the highway following a report of a wrong way driver heading southbound in the northbound lanes in Thomaston.

Police saw a Jeep Cherokee Latitude headed the wrong way, and then the vehicle struck a cruiser, according to state police. The vehicle then left the scene and continued going the wrong way on the highway, police said.

The trooper was not injured in the collision, according to state police.

Troopers were able to stop the vehicle on the highway in Watertown. According to police, Martins had glassy eyes, slurred speech, and difficulty standing and walking. Police said she failed sobriety tests.

Martins was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond, and she is due to appear in Superior Court in Waterbury on April 10.
