Danbury Fire Department Uses Drones For Storm Damage Assessment

They were called upon to help the Emergency Operations Center in New Fairfield assess damage aerially.

DANBURY, CT -- Members of the Danbury Fire Department were instrumental in helping the Emergency Operations Center in New Fairfield assess damage aerially, via drones, from the heavy storms and tornadoes that struck the region May 15.

In Danbury, a man was killed when the truck he had sought refuge in was struck by a falling tree. The National Weather Service confirmed six tornadoes touched down in Connecticut. There was also a macroburst reported in Brookfield. A woman was killed and her 3-year-old child injured after a tree crushed her car in New Fairfield. Another person was killed after a tree fell on his truck in the Candlewood Lake section of Danbury.

New Fairfield's Office of Emergency Management and the New Fairfield Fire Marshal thanked the Danbury FD for its assistance on their Facebook page.

The City of Danbury is submitting assessments of its own property damage to the state of Connecticut in the storms for federal reimbursement. This is the first step to obtaining federal funding. Danbury residents and business owners who were impacted by the storm are being encouraged to submit their own damage assessments by May 29.
