False Positive Coronavirus Tests Discovered At CT Lab
A flaw at the Connecticut Public Health laboratory yielded 90 false-positive coronavirus results.
CONNECTICUT — A flaw in a testing system caused 90 false positive coronavirus test reports, according to the state Department of Public Health.
A flaw at the state’s public health laboratory caused 90 out of 144 people tested between June 15 and July 17 to get a false positive result. Patients were notified of the error.
The exact cause of testing mirror is still being investigated.

“We have notified the healthcare facilities for everyone who received a false positive test result
from our state laboratory,” said Acting Commissioner Deidre S. Gifford. “Accurate
and timely testing for the novel coronavirus is one of the pillars supporting effective response to
the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the quick action of our team at the state lab, adjustments
have already been made to ensure the accuracy of future test results from this platform.”
The error was discovered when scientists at the labor were experimenting with testing of “pooled” testing samples by using samples that already tested positive.

Many of the false positive results were among nursing home residents; residents will be tested again as soon as possible, DPH said in statement.
