Greenwich Captures 21st State Open Championship In Girls Swimming

NEW HAVEN, CT — Greenwich High School cruised to a team victory in the CIAC State Open girls swimming championships Sunday at the Yale University pool, continuing its domination of the sport over the past four decades.

On the strength of three individual event winners plus amazing depth, the Cardinals compiled 633 points to easily outdistance runner-up Ridgefield, which had 539. Cheshire wound up a distant third.

The Open title was the second in three years under coach Brendan Heller, the 13th in the past 18 years and the 21st overall since 1980.

Payton Foster of Greenwich and Riley Anderson of the Manchester co-op team each won a pair of events. Foster captured the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, while Anderson was triumphant in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
