CT Weather: Severe Weather Possible Saturday And Sunday

Here are new details and a timeline for when Connecticut could see severe weather today and Sunday.

CONNECTICUT — The National Weather Service has expanded its hazardous weather outlook to both Saturday and Sunday for Connecticut. The main concern is the chance for severe thunderstorms accompanied by brief periods of heavy rain and wind gusts.

The weather service said showers and storms will develop midday in parts of the state and "additional thunderstorms are possible later this afternoon into evening, some of which could become strong to severe."

"The frontal passage will leave a very warm and humid airmass in place through Sunday. Scattered thunderstorms are likely Sunday afternoon into evening, with a few of those potentially becoming severe.

For southern Connecticut, the weather service said, "There is potential for scattered strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon into the evening. Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat. There is potential for a few severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon into the evening."

For northern Connecticut, the weather service said, "There is a risk for isolated to scattered thunderstorms capable of producing strong to damaging straight-line winds and hail this afternoon and evening. There is also a low probability for an isolated tornado.

"Another round of isolated to scattered thunderstorms is expected Sunday," the weather service said. "The main threats will be strong to damaging straight-line winds and hail."

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Ashley Baylor said on Twitter "... we could see some scattered showers as early as midday. There will be a chance of isolated strong/severe storms, especially between 4-7 PM. We'll watch out for downpours and strong wind gusts."

Fox 61 Meteorologist Sam Sampieri said on Twitter "The best chance for any strong storms is mid-late afternoon; especially if we get the sun to come out in between the first batch of showers midday (11A-3P). The sun + higher humidity + a front = stronger storms. Stay safe!"
