Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued As Thousands Lose Power In CT

A hazardous weather alert has been issued for southern Connecticut Monday due to the chance for flash flooding.

The National Weather Service cautions there could be flash flooding through late tonight.

The notice includes Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties.

The National Weather Service reports a cold front approaches from the west Monday afternoon, bringing a chance for severe thunderstorms.

“Instability and wind shear brings a threat for organized thunderstorms that may bring a risk for isolated instances of damaging winds,” the National Weather Service said.

It predicts the greatest storm risk will be between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Heavy rainfall is possible, and the National Weather Service cautions there is a flash flood threat through this evening, especially in urban areas.

“Flash floods are the top weather killer, so be safe on the roads in the event of flooding,” the National Weather Service said. “Turn around, don't drown!”

WFSB is calling today a First Alert Weather Day, and it predicts a cold front will interact with tropical moisture to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to the state. It predicts storms could produce 40 mph wind gusts, capable of causing damage.

“The afternoon storms will have the better chance of becoming severe if enough daytime heating develops, although flash flooding remains today’s primary concern,” WFSB reports.

Most of the state can expect up to 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain, but some locations could get between 2 and 4 inches, according to WFSB.

“In addition to torrential rainfall capable of causing flash flooding, storms may produce frequent lightning,” WFSB reports. “If storms become severe, the threat for damaging wind gusts will increase, and there is also a low-end risk for an isolated tornado.”

Looking ahead, the National Weather Service predicts Tuesday will be mostly sunny, with highs in the mid-80s. Chances for wet weather return on Wednesday through Friday, it predicts.

Power outages

Meanwhile, recent storms have resulted in power outages in Connecticut.

Eversource as of Monday at 10:30 a.m. was reporting 2,465 Connecticut customers without power, with highest clusters in Chester, Coventry, East Haddam, Kent, Old Saybrook, Ridgefield, Windsor and Woodstock.
