CONNECTICUT — With three locations closed and a fourth shuttering seemingly soon to come, Connecticut will be left with two Metro Mattress stores this fall as the chain slogs through the bankruptcy process.

Connecticut will cease to be a focus, according to the bankruptcy filing.

Here is the landscape:

The Metro Mattress at the Plaza at Burr Corners in Manchester is empty. An eviction proceeding had been filed by the plaza owner in Connecticut Superior Court on Aug. 16.

On Aug. 29, a similar filing was made by G2G3 Newington LLC against Metro Mattress for the 3475 Berlin Turnpike Location, rendering that store void.

The Newington filing claimed that rent was not paid for both May and June.

The store at 750 Queen Street in Southington is listed as being closed and calls to the location do not go through.

On its website this week, Metro Mattress listed a remaining store location at 3153 Berlin Turnpike in Newington, but staffers answering the phone said that could be closed sometime in October, citing a corporate decision.

That would leave Connecticut stores open only at 410 Universal Drive in North Haven and Orange at 507 Boston Post Road.

Metro Mattress on Sept. 4 filed for Chapter 11 status in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York.

Syracuse, N.Y.-based Metro Mattress was founded in 1970 and at one point boasted 70 stores in five states. The Chapter 11 filing cited expansion into new markets and recent downturns in the bedding industry as reasons for its difficulties.

The focus will be on New York and not Connecticut, according to the filing.
