Overdose Rates In CT May Be Stabilizing

Health officials are cautiously optimistic that opioid overdose rates have leveled off after reviewing ER visit data.

Visits to Connecticut emergency rooms for overdoses may have peaked, but visits are still 1.7 times the national average.

Preliminary data from the state Department of Public Health shows a stable rate of suspected overdose ER visits with 1,300 in the third quarter of 2018 and 1,200 in the fourth quarter.

"It is too early to determine if the current data is reflective of a trend, but we are guardedly optimistic that some of our state prevention efforts could be showing some initial results," said DPH Commissioner Dr. Raul Pino.
