TRUMBULL-NEW BRITAIN, CT — A scoring record was broken, a team finally achieved its first state title and another school pulled off an emotional last-second miracle to cap a wild and woolly day of Connecticut high school football championship games Saturday.

All kinds of history was made at McDougall Field on the campus of Trumbull High School. In the Class S championship game, Sheehan and Bloomfield combined for 97 points, a state record for a championship game, as the Titans slugged out a 64-33 victory. Following that contest, a moment of remembrance took place prior to the Newtown-Darien Class LL title tilt, which took place on the seventh anniversary of the Sandy Hook tragedy. Tied at 7-7 with 3.3 seconds left on the clock, Newtown scored on a 36-yard pass as time expired to provide the Nighthawks an emotional 13-7 win.

Veterans Stadium in New Britain saw Weston capture its first football title in school history, a 27-6 drubbing of Killingly in the Class M finals. The most highly-anticipated matchup of the day, the Class L clash between undefeated powerhouses St. Joseph and Daniel Hand, ended with the Cadets taking a 17-13 victory for their third straight title in its third different class.
