Severe Thunderstorms May Bring Lightning, Hail, And Heavy Rain To CT: New Timeline Released

A cold front will sweep through Connecticut today, bringing the chance for widespread thunderstorms, potentially damaging winds and even hail, according to meteorologists.

The National Weather Service reports the cold front will arrive this afternoon, bringing an end to the recent heat and a return to more seasonal temperatures for tonight.

A heat advisory is in place for northern Connecticut today until 8 p.m., including Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties, with heat index values of up to 96.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for much of southern Connecticut, including Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties, due to thunderstorms and damaging wind development expected this afternoon and evening.

WFSB is calling today a “First Alert Weather Day,” due to the heat and the risk for “strong to severe storms in association with an approaching cold front.”

“In addition to heavy rain and lightning, we’ll be monitoring for the threat of damaging wind gusts and potentially hail,” WFSB reports. “The greatest risk for strong or severe storms is across the shoreline counties.”

WTNH is also predicting stormy weather today.

“A line of thunderstorms that could be strong to severe will be moving through this afternoon/evening with a strong cold front coming through. Some severe warnings possible for damaging wind gusts!” WTNH reports.

As for timing, WTNH predicts showers and thunderstorms will be developing after 3 p.m., then moving out by this evening.

After today, expect much cooler weather in Connecticut, with highs on Thursday and Friday around 70 degrees. There is a chance for showers on Saturday, Sunday and Memorial Day, according to the National Weather Service.
