Stanley Black & Decker To Layoff 300 Employees, Timeline Issued Amid Impending Facility Closure
The company last week announced its plans to shutter its New Britain manufacturing facility.
NEW BRITAIN, CT — Employees at a local Stanley Black & Decker manufacturing facility will be laid off in five waves, starting in May, according to the company.
The company has filed a formal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice with the state Department of Labor.
In the notice, dated March 3, the company indicates it will be permanently closing its manufacturing facility at 600 Myrtle St. in New Britain and terminating 300 employees.

Most of the workers, or 287, will be terminated in the first wave of layoffs, between May 4 and May 18.
Three workers will be laid off between June 30 and July 14, followed by another eight between Aug. 30 and Sept. 13. The last two employees will be terminated in two waves in early 2027, with all layoffs finalized by mid-April 2027, according to the notice, written by Patrick Voll, plant manager.

The affected employees have a variety of titles with the company, such as machine operator, engineer, steelworker, machinist, and material handler.
The company cited a “decline in product demand,” for the reason to shutter the facility.
When the company announced its decision in late February, Debora Raymond, vice president of external communications, said it is a result of a “structural decline in demand for single-sided tape measures.”
The New Britain facility predominantly makes these products, according to Raymond.
Raymond said the company is trying to support employees during the transition, such as through “options for employment at other facilities, severance, and job placement support services.”
The company’s corporate headquarters remains at 1000 Stanley Dr., New Britain.
Stanley Black & Decker, founded in 1843, operates manufacturing facilities worldwide, according to its website. It reports having 43,500 employees globally, and makes an array of products, such as power tools and equipment, hand tools, and fasteners.
