Suspected Vandalism Of Flock Camera Probed In Putnam: PD

PUTNAM, CT — Police are investigating the recent apparent vandalism of a Flock automatic license plate reader.

According to Chief of Police Christopher D. Ferace, on the evening of Aug. 23, an unknown vehicle struck the Flock ALPR on Woodstock Avenue, or Route 171, then fled the scene.

“Although initially treated as an accident, the incident is now being investigated as a criminal matter after evidence suggested it may have been intentional,” Ferace said.

Ferace declined to give additional details, as he said the investigation remains open and ongoing.

The devices have been the subject of controversy recently, with detractors raising concerns about privacy issues. Supporters say they are a valuable tool for law enforcement and have helped solve crimes and find missing people.

In August, a Milford man was arrested and accused of deliberately damaging four city-owned license plate readers in July.
