Bloomfield, Tolland, Sacred Heart Academy Win Track Team Titles

NEW BRITAIN, CT — The first four state titlists of the 2023 Connecticut high school spring season were determined Tuesday, as the Class M and Class S outdoor track and field championships meets were conducted at Veterans Stadium in Willow Brook Park.

Bloomfield breezed to a sweep of the Class S crowns for the second straight year, with the girls winning their unprecedented 25th overall divisional title and the boys their 16th. In Class M, Tolland edged Suffield by a single point for its fourth boys championship, while Sacred Heart Academy earned its first state title.

Two class records were broken in the Class M meet by Joshua Mooney of Stonington, who set new standards in the two hurdling events while also capturing the javelin toss to become the only three-time individual event champion of the day.

Winners of two events in Class M were Marie Kane of Mercy (100, 200), Gabriella Zeller of Lewis Mills (300 hurdles, long jump), Aleisha Clarke of Hartford Public (100 hurdles, discus), Daniel Kennedy of Tolland (100, triple jump), Griffin Mandirola of Suffield (1600, 3200) and Avery Cipcic of Suffield (high jump, long jump).

In Class S, multiple individual winners were Avery Rueckert of Old Saybrook (200, 400), Jacob Volkerts of Old Lyme (100, 200) and Dylan Sheehan of Old Lyme (shot put, discus).
