AMERICAN CHARACTER: WHO WE ARE, AND WHY - Ages 10-18

Spots are still open for this intellectual history course

Join us each Thursday afternoon at 144 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford beginning this Thursday

  • What do we mean when we talk about America as a concept, a culture, and a set of ideas located in hearts and minds.
  • We will use literature, history, theory and personal experience to shed light on a number of major ideas--including our relationship with nature, race, democracy, and American exceptionalism--with the aim of achieving a better idea of who we are and how we got here.
  • Explore early Puritanism (e.g. John Winthrop and Nathaniel Hawthorne), to Transcendentalism (Emerson and Thoreau) to the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes and Sterling Brown), among many other great American thinkers and writers.
