AVON, CT — The Avon Free Public Library will mark National Library Week with a series of free public programs from Tuesday, April 21, through Tuesday, April 28, organized around this year’s theme, “Find Your Joy.”
The events, sponsored by the Friends of the Avon Library, include author talks, performances, and discussions. Most programs are free, though tickets are required for the annual Friends Author Luncheon.
The week begins Tuesday, April 21, at 2 p.m. with a live performance, “Poems with Robert Frost,” featuring actor Stephen Collins reading selections from the poet’s work.
On Wednesday, April 22, author Karen Olson will discuss her latest novel at 2 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. virtual discussion of the film Cinema Paradiso, part of the library’s film series curated by local patrons.
A highlight of the week is a joint performance on Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m., “Strings of Hope,” featuring musicians from the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and dancers from the Natyakshetram Bharathanatyam Dance School. No registration is required.
Earlier that day, the 14th annual Friends Author Luncheon will feature Amity Gaige. The ticketed event, held off-site, includes lunch, a talk, and a book signing opportunity.
Additional programs include a historical presentation on Saturday, April 25, “Remember Liss: A New American Founding Figure,” exploring the story of an enslaved Black woman seeking freedom during the nation’s founding era. The program is part of Avon’s America 250 commemorations.
On Monday, April 27, a program titled “The Pride & Prejudice of Fashion” will examine clothing styles from the era depicted in Pride and Prejudice.
The series concludes Tuesday, April 28, with an author visit by Peter Abrahams, who will discuss his latest book.
All events will take place at the library, 281 Country Club Road, unless otherwise noted. Registration is required for most programs.
