AVON, CT — Avon voters will head to the polls Wednesday, May 13, to decide whether to approve the town’s proposed $122.28 million town/school budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year.
The referendum will be held from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Road.
Absentee ballots are available through the town clerk’s office at Avon Town Hall.
The proposed budget totals $122,281,503, an increase of $3.66 million, or 3.08%, from the current fiscal year’s $118.62 million budget.
The referendum question asks voters: “Shall the annual town budget in the amount of $122,281,503 as recommended by the Board of Finance for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2026, be approved?”
Voters supporting the budget will vote “Yes,” while those opposed will vote “No.”
Town officials said the proposed spending plan would increase the tax rate. The proposed mill rate is 31.80, up from the current 30.75, an increase of 1.05 mills, or 3.41%.
For a home assessed at $300,000, the proposed rate would increase annual property taxes by approximately $315 compared with the current year, according to figures released by the town.
The town also noted a provision in Section 9.4.4 of the Avon Town Charter that could affect the outcome of the referendum. Under the charter, if voter turnout is less than 9% of registered voters based on the most recent active voter registry list, the budget is automatically deemed approved, even if most votes cast oppose it.
