AVON, CT — Avon’s America 250 celebration will continue this weekend with a series of events focused on Revolutionary War history, local heritage and community education.
The events, organized by local historical and civic groups, are part of the town’s ongoing commemoration leading up to the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
Historical hike
On Saturday, May 16, the Avon Land Trust will host a family hike to the“American Legacy” White Oak Tree in a wooded preserve off Nod Way.
The 2.5-mile hike begins at 10 a.m., with participants asked to arrive by 9:45 a.m. at the Nod Way trailhead parking area.
Organizers describe the white oak as a tree that was “just a sapling when America was young.”
The hike is open to all ages, and registration is requested through the Avon Land Trust website via this link.
'A Revolution of Her Own'
Later that afternoon, History At Play LLC will present “A Revolution of Her Own!” at the Sanctuary of West Avon Congregational Church, 280 Country Club Road.
The immersive living history performance tells the story of Deborah Sampson, the first woman to fight in and be honorably discharged from the American military.
The program runs from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and includes a reception afterward in Fellowship Hall.
The event is sponsored by the Avon Historical Society, Avon Free Public Library, and Avon Senior Center.
Grave-marking ceremony
On Sunday, May 17, Avon’s America 250 Coordinating Committee will host a commemoration and grave-marking ceremony at West Avon Cemetery, located at the corner of Country Club and Burnham roads, beginning at noon.
The event will unveil a newly designed plaque listing the names of 80 men from Northington — the historical name for part of present-day Avon — who served during the American Revolution between 1775 and 1783.
Organizers said the ceremony will also include a reading of the roll call and grave markings honoring seven patriots buried in the cemetery adjacent to West Avon Congregational Church.
No registration is required for the event.
