Relay For Life Continues Cancer Fight In Avon This Weekend

AVON, CT — The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Farmington Valley will return Saturday, May 30, with a western-themed community fundraiser aimed at supporting cancer research, patient services and caregiver programs.

The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 99 Thompson Road in Avon and is presented by Liberty Bank.

Organizers said Relay For Life brings residents together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and raise money for support services and research initiatives.

Here's how a Relay for Life works:

• Participants form teams and gather sponsors or raise funds in the months leading up to the event.
• Teams take turns walking or running around a designated track or path to symbolize that "cancer never sleeps," ensuring at least one team member is on the course at all times.

Funds raised through the event help support programs including transportation to treatment, a 24/7 helpline, and cancer research efforts conducted through the American Cancer Society.

In addition to walking, relays also feature myriad family activities.

This year’s event will feature a western-style theme with activities including mechanical bull rides, line dancing and square dancing lessons, family-friendly entertainment and a silent auction with more than 60 items.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet members of the Governor’s Horse Guard, according to promotional materials for the event.

Cancer survivors and caregivers are invited to attend a free Survivor and Caregiver Reception during the event.

Organizers noted that participants must be registered to ride the mechanical bull.
