Volunteers Needed To Remove Invasive Plants At Prominent Avon Park

AVON, CT — Avon Recreation & Parks is seeking volunteers to help remove invasive Japanese barberry from Fisher Meadows Park during a community workday on Friday, July 17.

The volunteer event begins at 3 p.m. at Fisher Meadows and is being organized in partnership with the Farmington River Watershed Association, the Avon Land Trust, and Eastern Connecticut State University botanist Dr. Bryan Connolly.

Participants will help remove Japanese barberry, a non-native shrub that organizers say crowds out native plants, reduces wildlife habitat and negatively affects the long-term health of forests.

The workday will also provide volunteers with an opportunity to learn about invasive species management from local experts while contributing to the stewardship of one of Avon's largest open spaces.

Organizers said volunteers of all experience levels are welcome to participate.
