AVON, CT — Avon residents will get a look inside the newly renovated Pine Grove Schoolhouse this weekend as the Avon Historical Society prepares the 161-year-old building for a larger role in the town's America 250 commemorations.
The society will hold a free "sneak peek" at the historic one-room schoolhouse, 3 Harris Road, from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6.
Visitors will be able to see recently completed interior painting using historically accurate colors, along with other improvements to the building.
Repairs have also been made to the pulley system for the original chalkboard, and the floors have been cleaned.
The schoolhouse's exterior was painted in 2024.
According to the society, the last full renovation of the building was completed in 1976 in conjunction with the nation's Bicentennial.
The latest work is part of an effort to reintroduce the Pine Grove Schoolhouse to the public during Avon's observance of the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The Sept. 6 event will serve as a preview of "Back to the Schoolhouse Day," scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, with a rain date of Sunday, Sept. 27.
That event will include activities and refreshments, as well as the opening of a time capsule that was hidden at the site in 1976.
The historical society has also partnered with Avon-based D-Squared Media to produce a documentary about the renovation of the Pine Grove Schoolhouse and its connection to the history of public education in the United States.
Documentary producers are expected to attend both September events to record community memories and archive memorabilia residents have collected over the years.
The Pine Grove Schoolhouse is regularly open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays from May through September.
Questions about the events can be directed to the Avon Historical Society at info@avonhistoricalsociety.org or 860-678-7621.
