Town offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day, according to the Town of Avon.

The holiday closures include:

Residents should also note a change affecting the library on Saturday, Sept. 5.

The library will be closed Saturday, while the landfill will operate on its regular schedule from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Regular municipal operations are expected to resume following the holiday.

Avon schools are also closed for the day, with classes resuming as normal on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The holiday was born out of the nation's labor movement and has since evolved into the notion of summer's last hurrah for all.

It is always the first Monday in September and, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it is "an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers."

"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being," reads the U.S. Department of Labor website.
