AVON, CT — Avon will recognize generations of local elected officials during a community celebration Saturday, Oct. 17, as part of the town's commemoration of America's 250th anniversary.
The event,"Avon Honors Those Who Serve," will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Road.
Organized by Avon's America 250 Coordinating Committee, the program will recognize current and former elected officials for their contributions to local government and public service.
The celebration will feature a panel discussion with four current and former Avon Town Council chairs: John Carlson, Mark Zacchio, Heather Maguire, and Dan Polhamus.
Panelists will discuss their experiences in town government, including accomplishments, difficult decisions, and lessons learned during their years of public service.
The program will also recognize members of Avon's elected boards, with current and former officials invited to stand and be acknowledged for their service.
Organizers said the event is intended to highlight the importance of local self-government, a tradition rooted in the American Revolution and carried forward by residents who volunteer to serve their communities.
The celebration will also allow former colleagues to reconnect and reflect on their work in town government.
All current and former elected officials, including those who served decades ago, are encouraged to attend.
The event is open to the public, with residents, families, and students invited to learn more about the people who have helped shape Avon through public service.
Cookies, refreshments, and an informal gathering will follow the program.
The Avon Democratic Town Committee and the Avon Republican Town Committee sponsor the event in part, reflecting the celebration's emphasis on recognizing public service across party lines.
