Avon Village: Five Businesses from the 1960s

Old Avon Village, now officially Avon Village: Marketplace, is excited to celebrate its 40th anniversary this September.  Avon Village was established in 1972, but some of its businesses were around even before bellbottoms and disco.

Meet five of our businesses that first opened their doors in the 1960s:

  1. Avon Shoe Repair has been in business since 1960.  Offering shoe and luggage repair, as well as skate sharpening, this handy business is ready to meet your everyday needs.
  2. The Little Silver Shop, home of the famous “button-bracelet” design, has been creating high-quality sterling silver and gold jewelry since 1962.  Stop by and look at Richard Parker’s collection of bracelets, earrings, necklaces, pendants, and more.
  3.  Subway, who also has a store nestled in Avon Village, had humble beginnings like many of our small businesses.   First established in 1965 by business partners Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck, Subway is now the world’s largest submarine sandwich chain with over 34,000 locations.
  4.  Village Needlecrafts, started in 1968 by Dolores DeMar, is Avon Village’s local crafting supply store.  DeMar offers a variety of sewing, mending, and alternation services as well as knitting, crocheting, needle point, and crewel supplies.
  5.  Harris in Wonderland, another unique Avon Village merchant, was developed from owner Seth Harris’ hobby of keeping and breeding fish.  Harris in Wonderland is a pet supply store for reptiles, amphibians, fish, and ponds.

Stop by Avon Village and visit Avon Shoe Repair, The Little Silver Shop, Subway, Village Needlecrafts, Harris in Wonderland and more! Be sure to visit us September 21st, 22nd, and 23rd for a fun, 70's themed birthday celebration to commemorate Avon Village’s 1972 establishment.
