Apollo Theater Historian Speaking at Avon Public Library

Bill Mitchell has seen many historic moments at the theater since he started working there in 1965. He'll be sharing stories on Dec. 6.

The Avon Public Library was awarded a grant from the Connecticut Humanities to sponsor The Apollo Theater: A history, a talk by Billy Mitchell, the historian of the historical theater.

Mitchell will be at the library on Dec. 6 at 3:30 p.m. as part of the library’s Changing America series.

Mitchell will share stories about working with music legends like the Temptations, Stevie Wonder and James Brown, according to a press release.

“Thanks to Connecticut Humanities we have this wonderful opportunity to glimpse into the world of these American music icons,” sad Glenn Grube, director of the Avon Public Library We’re thrilled to host Billy Mitchell as he brings the Apollo Theater’s rich history to life.”

Mitchell began work at the theater in 1965 as a 15-year-old errand boy. He worked his way through the ranks and has seen many of the great happenings at the theater firsthand.
