Avon Celebration of Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo had a small presence in the Avon schools and town on Thursday.

Perhaps the most celebration of Cinco de Mayo took place at Thompson Brook School, which has held many cultural presentations and events this year. Some band students performed Mexican music over the loudspeaker in the morning.

Thompson Brook math teacher Michael Netkovick taught a math lesson in Spanish in the morning, and re-enacted it with his class later in the day for Avon Patch.

Principal Crisanne Colgan, principal of Roaring Brook School said that the faculty had a Cinco de Mayo themed luncheon.

The Morris Senior Center hosted a trip to Puerto Vallerta for some of its seniors, and they were there for lunch, many wearing festive glasses and the senior center director donning a sombrero.

Some of the employees of Puerto Vallarta said that this evening they will be giving out tee-shirts in honor of the day. There will also be a DJ and drink specials.

In addition to Cinco de Mayo, President Barack Obama proclaimed May 5 National Prayer Day for this year, and Governor Dannel P. Malloy also declared Thursday a day of prayer in Connecticut. Many Avon and Farmington Valley residents from different faiths were at the Town Green on Thursday at noon to hear some prayer, music and socialize.
