AVON/SIMSBURY, CT — A recent Avon High School graduate recently completed a major milestone in his scouting career with a project benefitting a Simsbury synagogue.

Avon Troop 274 awarded Griffin Johnson with the rank of Eagle Scout on Jan. 7 at the Eagle Court of Honor at West Avon Congregational Church, which is the Troop’s charter organization.

The Eagle rank is scouting’s highest rank and is earned by less than 4 percent of scouts.

To earn Eagle, scouts must complete a set of skills, leadership, and service objectives for each of the six ranks, earn at least 21 merit badges, and plan, lead, and complete a community service project before age 18.

A Class of 2023 Avon High School graduate, Johnson began scouting as a Tiger Scout in Avon Cub Scout Pack 122 with his father Kurt Johnson serving as scoutmaster.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Johnson built and enhanced an outdoor handicap-accessible education space at the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation (FVJC) in Simsbury.

He designed and built three ADA-compliant picnic tables and four moveable benches, removed invasive Pachysandra, mulched the area, and laid a ring of stones around the edge to create a decorative and functional border.

The extra seating Johnson provided and installed now allows now the outdoor space to be used for a variety of activities by the synagogue, including education and religious services
Johnson is now a freshman at Philadelphia’s Drexel University and is studying biological sciences with the intent to pursue research in regenerative medicine. He is also a member of Drexel’s Division I Rowing Team.
