Avon FD Hopes Open House Will Help Grow Its Ranks
The Avon Volunteer Fire Department Saturday will host an open house to show off what it has to offer, as well as find volunteers.
AVON, CT — The Avon Volunteer Fire Department is looking for new members to carry on its tradition of saving lives and property, with an open house Saturday expected to help.
The AVFD is hosting the open house at its Secret Lake Fire Station, 106 Secret Lake Road, Avon, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 16.
There, guests — and, perhaps, prospective firefighters — will be able to enjoy station and truck tours and, simply, see what the AVFD has to offer volunteers and what those volunteers offer to the community.

In addition, there will be coffee and light refreshments served at the event.
AVFD officials say the department needs volunteers to help maintain its ranks so it can remain an all-volunteer organization.

Should the AVFD not have enough volunteers, the town will have to resort to other firefighting/emergency services options, which could come with a hefty tax hike.
According to the AVFD, volunteers must be aged 18 or older to become firefighters, with the AVFD Fire Explorers being for those aged 14 and up, with completion of eighth grade a requirement.
Candidates must complete an application and pass a physical exam before undergoing training for the department.
No prior firefighting experience is necessary.
