Avon FD Open House To Showcase Firefighting Capabilities

The Avon Volunteer Fire Department is hoping to gain a few new volunteers at the event, which is on Sunday, May 19.

AVON, CT — In a classic example of a win-win, an Avon Volunteer Fire Department open house event on Sunday will provide an enjoyable day out for the family and, perhaps, help the AVFD grow its ranks.

The open house will take place at the fire station at 490 West Avon Road, which is next to Avon High School, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19.

Among the activities planned are a fire safety trailer; fire extinguisher training; vehicle extrication demonstration; station/truck tours; and hot dogs and refreshments.

Parking is at Avon High School.

While the free program promises to enthrall visitors with the ins and outs of fire department life, it just might get a few folks to sign up to help their community.

Part of Sunday's program is a recruitment drive to find more volunteers.

Adults must be 18 years or older to become one, with young "fire explorers" needing to have finished eighth grade.

Training is provided and candidates must complete an application and have a medical exam, paid for by the AVFD.
