Avon FD: Prepare To Avoid Chimney Fires Now
Citing the upcoming fall season, Avon firefighters Monday issued a notice on how residents can avoid chimney fires.
AVON, CT — Local firefighters Monday issued an alert for homeowners to make sure their chimneys are clean and ready for fire season, which isn't too far away.
According to the AVFD, now is the time to prepare for the cooler weather season.
"Now is the time to think ahead and schedule your chimney cleaning and inspection to prevent chimney fires," wrote local firefighters.

Citing the Chimney Safety Institute of America, the AVFD recommends:
• People get their chimney's cleaned before the first fire of the season.

• Homeowners prevent the buildup of creosote.
• Cover the fireplace.
• Do not sleep or leave the house with a fire in the fireplace.
• Safely dispose of ashes.
"Always make sure that you have smoke detectors installed in your home and that they are in working order," wrote the AVFD.
